World Boxing Championship: Nikhat Zareen in final, chance to match Mary Kom

World Boxing Championship: Female boxer Nikhat Zareen is close to creating history. He has made it to the final of the World Championship. She has become the world champion in the junior category.

New Delhi. Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen (52kg) advanced to the final of the World Boxing Championship with a dominant victory in Istanbul on Wednesday. While Manisha Maun (57kg) had to be content with the bronze medal. Former junior world champion Nikhat Zareen remained calm and dominated her opponent during her match against Brazil’s Caroline de Almeida. Due to which she managed to register a 5-0 victory in the last four matches of the 52kg category in a unanimous decision. But Manisha lost to Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Irma Testa of Italy by the same margin.

Manisha, the bronze medalist of the 2019 Asian Championship, was playing in her second World Championship. The Indian boxer tried to overtake his technically superior opponent with powerful punches, but Testa’s defense was excellent. Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL and Lekha C are the only Indian women boxers who have won world titles. Now Hyderabad’s boxer Zareen also has a chance to be included in this list.

Won 8 medals in 2006

India’s best performance in this competition has been in 2006, when the country had 8 medals including 4 gold, one silver and three bronze. Four Indian boxers had returned with a medal in the previous phase, in which Manju Rani won the silver medal, while Mary Kom won the 8th World in the form of a bronze medal. Parveen Hooda (63kg) also lost in the semi-finals and had to settle for bronze. She lost 1-4 to Amy Broadhurst of Ireland.
