Dehradun, July 31: Foreign tourists in Uttarakhand are increasingly choosing the state for more than its famous pilgrimage circuits, with growing interest in yoga, wellness, adventure tourism and cultural experiences. According to the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB), the steady rise in international arrivals highlights the state’s growing popularity among global travellers.

Official tourism data shows that foreign tourists in Uttarakhand have increased consistently over the last five years. The state welcomed around 15,000 international visitors in 2021, which rose to over 64,000 in 2022, 1.48 lakh in 2023, 1.76 lakh in 2024, and 1.93 lakh in 2025.

Rishikesh Remains the Top Choice for Foreign Tourists in Uttarakhand

UTDB Additional Director Poonam Chand said Rishikesh continues to be the most preferred destination for overseas visitors due to its globally recognised yoga centres, meditation retreats, wellness programmes and river adventure activities.

According to the tourism department, the city welcomed more than one lakh foreign tourists in 2025, making it the leading international tourist destination in Uttarakhand.

Haridwar, Dehradun and Hill Stations Attract International Visitors

Apart from Rishikesh, Haridwar continues to attract foreign travellers who visit the city to witness the famous Ganga Aarti and experience its spiritual atmosphere. The city recorded nearly 24,000 international visitors during 2025.

Dehradun is also emerging as an independent tourist destination rather than just a gateway to the hills. The capital city welcomed over 31,000 foreign tourists last year.

Popular hill stations including Mussoorie and Nainital continue to remain favourites among overseas visitors because of their pleasant weather, scenic landscapes and colonial heritage.

Char Dham Continues to Receive Limited Foreign Visitors

While tourism is growing across Uttarakhand, the Char Dham shrines—Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri—continue to witness comparatively fewer foreign tourists as these destinations primarily attract Indian pilgrims.

Tourism officials believe international visitors generally prefer wellness tourism, cultural experiences, nature-based activities and adventure travel over religious pilgrimages.

Better Connectivity Driving Tourism Growth

Officials attribute the increase in foreign tourists in Uttarakhand to improved road connectivity, rising global interest in wellness tourism and greater awareness of the state’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The Tourism Department is also promoting village tourism, offbeat destinations and local traditions through various campaigns and promotional activities. Authorities said both domestic and international visitors receive similar tourism facilities, with continued efforts to position Uttarakhand as a leading destination for wellness, adventure, eco-tourism and cultural travel.

Uttarakhand Strengthens Global Tourism Appeal

With increasing international arrivals every year, Uttarakhand is steadily expanding its identity beyond a pilgrimage destination. The government’s focus on sustainable tourism, improved infrastructure and promotion of lesser-known destinations is expected to further strengthen the state’s appeal among global travellers in the coming years.
