The process is quite tedious and has made one of the most common types of repairs for independent mobile repair outlets quite difficult. Apple-authorized repair shops, on the other hand, have access to a restricted software tool that allows the iPhone to easily accept a new screen.

As The Verge reports, this is now set to change once the update is rolled out. This will allow screen replacement on the iPhone 13 without the need for transfer of the microcontroller.

iFixit previously noted that removing the microcontroller was so difficult that it would have required a microscope. This may have hit independent repair shops, but the new update means they can breathe a sigh of relief.
It’s unclear when the update will be released at this time – Apple hasn’t announced a release date for it yet. Apple is known to restrict repairs on iPhones, and this move comes as a surprise. The most plausible explanation for this may be the US government’s push to strengthen the ‘right to repair’ rules.
