‘No One Touched Them Till…’: Anurag Thakur On FIR Against Wrestlers

Day after the Delhi police intervened with protesting wrestlers who were en route to the new Parliament building, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, stated that the demonstrators were not interfered with as long as they remained within the designated area at Jantar Mantar, news agency PTI reported.

On Sunday, Delhi police apprehended Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sangeeta Phogat, Sakshi Malik and numerous others who were endeavoring to advance towards the new Parliament building for a women’s “Mahapanchayat. “

On Sunday, the wrestlers who had been holding protests at Jantar Mantar since April 23 to demand the arrest of BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, whom they accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers were arrested temporarily and released later.

According to officials, the protesting wrestlers were accused of disregarding the police’s warning that causing disturbance during the inauguration of the new Parliament building would be detrimental to the nation’s reputation and would not be acceptable. As a result, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against them.

Addressing the media, Thakur stated that an FIR had already been registered on the allegations of the wrestlers as directed by the Supreme Court. “No one stopped them from holding protests at a place allotted to them (by authorities). No one stopped them when they organised a candle march at that designated place,” he was quoted by PTI in its report.

The minister urged the individuals involved in the case to come forward and provide their statements to the Delhi police, who have registered an FIR following the orders of the Supreme Court. Once the investigation is complete, appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.

“It was a historic moment for the people of India as we celebrated Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. India, considered as the mother of democracy, was receiving its new Parliament building,” he said.
