The cold wave is running from the high peaks of the snow-capped mountains to the low-lying areas in the foothills. People are chilling in the cold due to the icy winds. There has been snowfall in Chardham as well. Auli, Joshimath, Badrinath, Hemkund, Rudraprayag, and Chopta have received snowfall in the Chamoli district. Due to fresh snowfall in the nearby peaks including Kedarnath Dham in Rudraprayag, the temperature has reached minus.
There has been heavy snowfall in the high-altitude areas including Gangotri Yamunotri Dham. More than 50 villages in the district have been covered with a sheet of snow. The connectivity of most of the villages has also been cut off.
The Gangotri Highway is blocked from Gangnani to Gangotri due to snowfall. The highway is blocked from Radi Top and Rana Chatti to Janki Chatti. The motorway connecting Uttarkashi Srinagar to Kedarnath has also been closed due to snowfall near Chowringhee.
On the other hand, traffic operations came to a standstill due to snowfall in the high-altitude rural areas of Jaunsar Bawar last night. The Mussoorie-Chakrata-Tuni National Highway was closed due to the second snowfall of the season in Lokhandi and surrounding areas.
A thick layer of snow has accumulated on the road ahead of Chakrata on the 15-kilometer stretch between Dharnadhar-Jadi, and Lokhandi-Koti Kanasar on the highway. Due to the closure of the highway due to snowfall, the road connectivity of about 100 villages of the border area has been cut off from the tehsil, block, and district headquarters.
In Kedarnath Dham, where about four feet of snow has accumulated, and the weather of the Dham has become very cold. Reconstruction work in Kedarnath has also come to a complete standstill.
At the same time, snow has accumulated on many high peaks of the district including Tungnath, Madmaheshwar, Kalishila, Panwalikantha, and Chandrashila. Along with Rudraprayag, the civic bodies have lit bonfires at many places including Tilwada, Agastyamuni, and Ukhimath to beat the cold.
