No need to panic: Maharashtra Health Minister after first Zika virus case in state

fter a woman was detected with the Zika virus in Pune recently, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Wednesday urged people not to panic and informed that steps are being taken by the state to ensure there is no spread of the mosquito-borne disease.

A three-member central team reached Pune on Friday after the 50-year-old woman became the first person to be infected with the Zika virus in Maharashtra. She has now completely recovered.

Rajesh Tope said the multidisciplinary team, dispatched by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), visited the Pune district to review the situation after the Zika virus case was found in a village under Purandar taluka.

“Mosquito breeding areas are being destroyed and symptoms of patients are also monitored. Steps are being taken to ensure there is no spread of the disease,” Rajesh Tope said.

According to news agency PTI, the three-member central team consists of a public health expert from the office of Regional Director, Pune; a gynecologist from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi; and an entomologist from National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR), ICMR, New Delhi.

A Maharashtra government medical team had also visited the village on Saturday. The team met the sarpanch and gram panchayat members and instructed them about the preventive measures that are needed to be taken against the Zika virus.

After contracting the Zika virus, which spreads through the bite of the aedes aegypti mosquito, most patients do not experience any kind of symptoms. However, the typical symptoms one can feel include fever, body ache and conjunctivitis.

State surveillance officer Dr Pradip Awate last week urged everyone that there was no need to panic.

“Zika is a moderate disease as 80 per cent patients do not get any symptoms and the remaining 20 per cent have moderate flu-like symptoms. One can recover by drinking enough water, taking rest and having a simple paracetamol tablet,” he had said.
