Drugs have become a big problem in Uttarakhand. Punjab is considered to be its biggest center, but now Nainital of Uttarakhand is not far behind in this race.

Till now Punjab was infamous for its drunken youth, but no one would have imagined that which is called Devbhoomi, where Ganga Yamuna originates, now the same Uttarakhand is becoming a victim of drugs. Many districts of the state are in the grip of drugs and the next generation of the state is being ruined. District Nainital is the most affected among all these. The city of Haldwani in Nainital district of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand has become a hotbed of drug dealers.

Not only the young youth of Haldwani, teenagers and adolescent girls are also increasingly trapped in the swamp of smack and other intoxicating drugs. After liquor and charas, smack is being dissolved in the intoxicants of the youth here. From teenagers to youth getting intoxicated, they have started committing criminal crimes, most of the drug addicts are getting caught in the incidents of theft and snatching.

How are school students becoming victims of drug smugglers?

Drug dealers are targeting children of public and government schools and students living in hostels. Children of many well-known schools of the city are rapidly becoming addicted to smack. Smack sellers sell smack to these children by standing around the schools during school opening, interval and holidays. After making smack sticks, smugglers are using these children as carriers when there is no money to buy it.

Along with many districts of Uttar Pradesh, a large quantity of smack consignments from Bareilly, Bilaspur, Baheri, Rampur etc. are reaching Haldwani and the hills from there. Drug peddlers of Bareilly are major suppliers of drugs. Some time ago Bareilly police busted the inter-state gang and during interrogation it was revealed that the gang used to supply this smack to various states including Uttarakhand, Haryana and Delhi. The reason behind the rapidly increasing number of smack smugglers is two to three times profit in each puddle along with addiction.

Corruption and drug trade connection

One of the reasons for the rapid spread of corruption is attributed to its acceptance in the society. In today’s era, corrupt officers or employees do not become an eyesore because taking or getting work done has now become a part of our national culture. No one now considers it a character weakness or immoral in everyday life.

Something similar can also be said in relation to the prevalent drug abuse among the youth. The acceptance of drugs is increasing so much, especially among youth and teenagers, that names like Grass, Ecstasy, Smack have become synonymous with modernity. By the time you reach a certain stage of age, if you have not gone through the supposedly ‘indescribable’ experience of drugs and their use, then you are likely to be counted among those backward who do not know how to enjoy life.

Addiction is now spreading its feet even on the mountains, the roots of this pathology are now deeply rooted within the uncultured spread as a waste of tourism. The poison of drug addiction passing through the towns like towns of Terai Bhavar has now caught the city which was once called elite like Nainital.
