New Delhi: Just hours after the new mayor of Delhi was declared, a fight broke out between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members inside the MCD House over the election of the members of the standing committee on Wednesday, news agency ANI reported. During the fight, the MLAs hurled paper balls and water bottles at each other, a video of the incident shows. New Mayor Shelly Oberoi alleged that BJP councillors tried to attack her on the floor.

Mayor Shelly Oberoi alleged that BJP councillors tried to attack her as she tried to conduct the standing committee election. “BJP Councillors just tried to attack me while I was conducting the Standing Committee elections, as per Supreme Court orders! This is the extent of BJP’s Gundagardi that they are trying to attack a woman Mayor,” she tweeted.

According to ANI, proceedings of the House were stalled. “Proceedings of MCD house will begin after an hour,” newly elected Delhi mayor Shelly Oberoi was quoted as saying by ANI. According to India Today, AAP MLAs alleged that BJP corporator Shikha Rai tried to snatch the microphone from Oberoi when the House was in session.

“BJP goons attacked AAP mayor and women councilors with water bottles. Today the whole country has seen that BJP is a party of ruffians, goons, mavalis and illiterates,” the AAP tweeted.

AAP MLA Praveen Kumar said: “After losing the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections, see how the BJP councilors are doing hooliganism in the House, BJP goons are afraid of defeat in the Standing Committee elections. Whatever BJP people do, your corruption in MCD is going to be exposed very soon.”

AAP MP Sanjay Singh also tweeted a video of the incident.

Earlier in the day, AAP’s Shelly Oberoi won against BJP councillor Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes in the election to the top post in the much-awaited first meeting of the newly elected Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The Aam Aadmi Party also won the Delhi Deputy Mayor’s post after bagging the mayor’s seat in the Municipal Corporation. AAP candidate Aaley Mohammad Iqbal won the deputy mayor’s post by raking in 147 votes against BJP’s Kamal Bagdi’s haul of 116 votes.
