Uttarakhand News: Building collapses in Joshimath, one killed, five rescued
Uttarakhand Building Collapse: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) said that seven people living in the building worked in a nearby crusher unit on the banks of the Alaknanda River.
Joshimath News: One person died while five others were rescued after a building collapsed late Tuesday evening in Helang near Joshimath in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) said that they have retrieved one body from the debris and a search is on to rescue another person buried under the debris.
According to a Hindustan Times report, SDRF Inspector Harak Singh said that seven people living in the building used to work in a nearby crusher unit on the banks of the Alaknanda River. He said, ‘One of them, Anmol, [who was around 20 years old], has died. Five people were rescued and admitted to the hospital, while efforts are on to rescue one trapped person.

site of the building collapse is about 13 km from Joshimath, where 868 structures have developed cracks so far and 181 have been declared unsafe. This month, five families from Joshimath’s Sunil Ward were shifted to relief camps amid fears of further instability of structures due to heavy rains.
Residents met district magistrate Himanshu Khurana in June to discuss the dangers the city faces during the monsoon season.
Local residents called a mahapanchayat.
Joshimath residents, who were to resume their agitation on Independence Day Tuesday demanding their rehabilitation under the banner of Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti (JBSS), postponed it. A mahapanchayat (grand assembly) has been called on 21 August. The affected families are planning to hold daily dharna from the next day.
