Study no other subject outside curriculum, Deoband tells its students

The Darul Uloom, Deoband, has issued a notice, directing its students to not get any additional education, including English and other subjects, while pursuing their education at the Islamic seminary.

The institute has said that it only instructed students that while studying at the seminary, they should not study outside as the curriculum requires their full attention and time and “they won’t be able to succeed in their curriculum if they pursue other subjects outside the institute”.  Darul Uloom Deoband is in Saharanpur district of UP and is a prominent Islamic seminary.

A notice by the Education department of the Darul Uloom Deoband read, “The students are being informed that while studying at Darul Uloom Deoband, they will not be allowed to get any additional education (English, etc). And if any student is found engaged in this act or if it is known through credible sources that a student is getting additional education, then that student will be expelled.”

In a statement, Arshad Madani, principal of Darul Uloom Deoband, said, “Our course and our books do not allow us to study other things with it. Because what we teach in six hours, if a student doesn’t study it in the evening, then they can’t succeed. Hence, we have said that after completing your education here, you can become a doctor, engineer, advocate. Or whatever you want. But while studying here, you are not allowed to study anything while you are studying here.” Madani is also the president Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind.

Sufiyan Nizami, spokesperson of Darul Uloom Firangi Mahal, which is a seminary based in Lucknow, said, “It is being misreported that Darul Uloom, Deoband, has passed an order for expulsion of students who study English. This is wrong.”

“Every institute has a rule that students follow the curriculum. Nowhere is it allowed that a student acquires education at a different institute. This is what Darul Uloom, Deoband, has said,” he added.

Uttar Pradesh Madarsa Board chairman and BJP leader Iftikhar Ahmed Javed said that “if an order has been passed by any educational institute prohibiting students from studying English, it is wrong”.

“I am not sure what the order is. But if any educational institute is barring students from studying English, it is wrong. The world has moved at a fast pace and Muslim students also need to move ahead. For them to join mainstream, it is important they study English and other languages. Only then will their education be complete,” said Javed.
