Lata Mangeshkar’s father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was a theater artist and singer. It was he who started singing Lata in childhood and predicted that one day Lata would become a very big singer. However, Pandit Dinanath passed away when Lata was just 13 years old.

According to media reports, voiceover artist Harish Bhimani quoted Lata Mangeshkar’s brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar as saying that Lata used to miss her father very much on ventilator in her last days. She had asked Hridaynath for the recordings of the father’s songs in the hospital’s ICU and was listening to them. Along with this, despite the doctors’ refusal, she used to remove the mask and try to hum her father’s songs. Two days before his death, he started listening to songs by asking for earphones in the hospital itself due to difficulty in hearing.

Lata ji was born on September 28, 1929 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Since childhood, seeing her father sing, she tried to sing like him in private, but was afraid to sing in front of her father. Dinanath loved him very much. Earlier she was named Hema, but later Pandit Dinanath changed her name to Lata after getting influenced by the character named Latika in one of his plays ‘Bhav Bandhan’. Dinanath first heard Lata singing at the age of 5 and was stunned. Since then, along with Lata’s father, he had also become a guru.
