Keep hallmark in mind before buying gold
While buying gold, keep in mind its quality. It would be good to buy gold jewelery only after seeing the hallmark. Hallmark is a government guarantee of gold and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the only agency in India that determines the hallmark.
The hallmarking scheme operates under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, rules and regulations. Jewelery is not made from 24 carat gold. 24 carat gold is considered to be the purest gold but it does not make jewelry because it is very soft.
Mostly 22 carat to 18 carat gold is used more for jewelry. Each carat would have a different hallmark number. For example, 999 on 24 carat, 958 on 23 carat gold, 916 on 22 carat, 875 on 21 carat and 750 on 18. This gives information about the purity of gold.
