Satyajit Ray is arguably one of India’s most influential and accomplished filmmakers. Other than being a masterful filmmaker, Satyajit Ray was also known for designing his movie posters, making book covers, and illustrating comics and magazines.

Ray employed styles like woodblock printing, calligraphy, photography, and screen printing in his posters. This year, May 2 marked Ray’s 102nd birth anniversary. To celebrate the occasion, The Paperclip, a digital media company, shared a set of AI-made pictures that reimagined Ray’s movie posters.

These AI-created posters of movies like Charulata, Sonar Kella, Nayak, Devi, Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, Jalsaghar, Pratidwandi, and Pather Panchali raked up hundreds of likes and invoked mixed reactions from netizens as well.

Appreciating the AI interpretation of iconic movie posters a Twitter user wrote, “Wow…that’s really very interesting interpretation of the maestro’s movie posters but I loved AI interpretation of Goopy & Bagha ”.

Echoing the opposite sentiment, another Twitter user said, “The only thing it proves is that AI has still a long way to go before it can even think of replacing the creativity and the imagination of Maestros like Ray”.

Another person said, “Taking the work of one of the best poster designers in Indian cinema — whose work is on art syllabi and taught in universities — and reimagining it with AI as if it’s an “improvement” is a good commentary on we are trained to see results with tech as better, and more creative.”
