Two accused in the guava orchard compensation scam have deposited with the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) the compensation amount wrongly claimed by them. The amount was deposited in compliance with the orders of the district court.
However, the outcome of the trial of the case won’t be affected by the depositing of the amount.
Shama Jindal and Parveen Lata were granted bail by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Krishan Kumar Singla on June 13. In compliance with the court orders, Shama Jindal had deposited a demand draft for Rs 32.85 lakh while Parveen Lata have deposited the demand draft for Rs 76.33 lakh with the GMADA.
While granting the bail, the court ordered, “The applicant/accused is directed to deposit the amount of compensation with regard to fruit-bearing trees received by her with GMADA with interest at the rate of 15 per cent per annum within a period of one month from her release from custody. However, the deposit of amount will be subject to final outcome of civil and criminal proceedings.”
A senior officer of GMADA told The Indian Express that the process of depositing the amount had started and as of now two accused have approached GMADA.
“Both Shama Jindal and Praveen Lata have deposited their demand drafts and the process is on. As of now, two accused have approached us,” the officer said.
The Vigilance Bureau (VB) has claimed in the court that the total fraud is of around Rs 137 crore and a total of 35 accused have been named in the FIR so far.
It is for the first time that the alleged money of a scam had been returned by the accused to the GMADA. The VB is trying to get back the entire amount of the wrongly claimed money in the guava compensation scam.
The VB had registered an FIR in the multi-crore scam last month and arrested main accused Bhupinder Singh. Ferozepur Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman’s wife Jasmine Kaur too is an accused in the case.
The court had ordered four more accused who were granted bail to deposit the wrongly claimed compensation with the GMADA.
