After the formation of Uttarakhand state for the Almora assembly seat, in the first election held in the year 2002, Kailash Sharma of Bharatiya Janata Party was elected MLA. In 2007 and 2012, this seat was with the Congress. In 2007, Manoj Tiwari of Congress had reached the assembly for the first time from this seat. Manoj Tiwari had retained his hold on this seat in the 2012 elections as well.
Mandate of 2017
In the 2017 assembly elections from Almora assembly seat, Manoj Tiwari had landed on a Congress ticket in search of a third consecutive victory. BJP fielded Raghunath Singh Chauhan in front of him. BJP’s Raghunath scuttled Manoj Tiwari’s plans to score a hat-trick of victory. Raghunath Singh Chouhan defeated his nearest rival Manoj of Congress by a margin of more than five thousand votes.
